Volume is comprised of the ship's log for the US Steamer Saranac in the first 60 pages, and the ship's log for the US Flagship Lancaster in the last 132 pages. Entries from the Saranac date from March 17, 1862 to November 1, 1862 while the ship is docked in the Panama Bay. The Lancaster entries cover January 17, 1863 to November 3, 1863. The ship patrols the Pacific Coasts of South, Central and North America, sailing from Panama to Valparaiso, Chile and working its way north to San Francisco. Entries range in content; all include daily weather conditions, others report latitude & longitude, distance traveled, crew activities, provisions received, or misconduct among the crew and subsequent punishments.
